Kona Mountain Bikes
Kona Bicycle Company is a bicycle company based in Ferndale, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia. The company was founded in 1988 by Jacob Heilbron, Dan Gerhard and Joe Murray. The company name comes from love of the owners of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
The company generally specializes in a variety of high-tech, high-performance bicycles including mountain bikes, racing and touring bicycles. Although they also make a line of lower end bikes to compete with the big names mass market bike companies such as Specialized, Trek, and Giant. Kona currently market over 80 models of bicycles.
In keeping with the Hawaiian origin of the company name, the company’s early line of bicycles were given names connected with Hawaii. Models such as Cinder Cone, Fire Mountain, Hot, Lava Dome and Kilauea were named after Hawaiian volcanoes. Explosif, Hei Hei and Hahannah are Hawaiian terms. Later, Kona started to use humor and wit in naming their bikes with names such as Coiler and Stinky.
Many serious mountain bikers consider Kona bikes to be some of the best designed, built and coolest looking mountain bikes on the market.
Kona has been developing partnerships with bike parks, primarily with Whistler Blackcomb Bike Park, in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, where riders can rent versions of the Stinky. Other partner bike parks are in Austria and Italy.
